By Abuchi Onwumelu

As the gubernatorial election draws closer in Anambra State, a Non-Governmental Organization under the aegis of The Girl Child Destiny for Better Tomorrow, has advocated for a woman to be selected as the next deputy governor.

Speaking to newsmen in Awka, the group’s coordinator, Amb Lady Maryann Ekeh-lzuchukwu, suggested four names for possible consideration with special emphasis on Hon Beverly Ifeanyi Nkemdiche, member representing Onitsha South II State Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, whom she described as capable.

Others whose names made the list for consideration were, Hon. Rita Maduagwu, Vivian Okadigbo and Hon. Anthonia Tabansi-Okoye.

Extolling the qualities of women as capable hands that could function well as the DG or the governorship itself, Lady Eke-Izuchukwu stated that the current Deputy Chief Whip and highest ranking member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon Nkemdiche, stood tall among the rest.

According to her, Hon. Nkemdiche had a good working relationship with the Speaker and Governor Willie Obiano.

Her words, ‘Hon. Beverly Nkemdiche is in her third tenure in the House. She has been serving her constituency, Onitsha South II, in the State House of Assembly, under the ruling party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) diligently and has been their voice as the only woman in the House.

‘She is a renowned philanthropist. She has helped people through her Nkemdiche Foundation, reached out to the less privileged, widows, indigent students whose tuitions she pays, while funding little businesses for her constituents.

‘She is best known for her kindness, honesty, intelligence, courage and outspokenness. Indeed, she’s a beauty inside out.’

She said that as pro-feminine group, The Girl Child Destiny for Better Tomorrow believed that the inclusion of Nkemdiche in governance at the executive level would bring about better bargain for the women folk in Anambra State and the girl child in particular.

‘We believe that the future of the Anambra girl child will be better served with her as the deputy governor of Anambra State in the next dispensation. Hon. Beverly Ifeanyi is happily married with children,’ she concluded.
