Anambra State Government, through the State Physical Planning Board has destroyed shanties erected under power lines in Kara, Atani Road and Ogbunike Toll-Gate in Oyi Council Area.

Officials of the Board led by the Acting General Manager, Mr. Nwabufo Anene disclosed that the move was in line with its mandate of controlled development.

Among structures destroyed were shanties and make shift structures, which it was gathered are used as hide out for criminals and prostitudes.

Fifty-two rooms used by prostitutes in a popular brothel in Kara were also demolished.

However, in recognition of freedom of worship, places of worship cited in the Kara area were left undemolished as at the time of filing this report.

Addressing the press shortly after the exercise, Mr. Anene said that the exercise was hitch free, recalling that the same exercise was executed in Kara about a month ago and most of the illegal occupants later came back again.

He disclosed that there are plans by the government to condone the areas off to prevent entry and recalled that a similar exercise had been done at the Ogbunike Toll gate four consecutive times, noting that high population often results to brothels and shanties leading to criminals making use of the place.

He called on the State citizenry to be law abiding and seek approved places for doing business, rather than a temporary place which stands the the risk of being destroyed.
Some of the affected persons lamented that government did not give them enough notice before embarking on such exercise
