The Anambra State Commissioner for Women’s and Children’s Affairs, Mrs Ify Obinabo, has called for the full prosecution of a 60-year old man, Mr Boniface Onyekwere, who raped a 12-year old girl.
Onyekwere, a pastor with Deeper Life Bible Church, and a lecturer with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, had last month allegedly raped his house help on several occasions, causing her to jump down from their two-storey apartment to escape the act.
The Commissioner who spoke during a courtesy visit on her by a group, Ultimate Business Women and Farmers Association of Nigeria, said nothing would assuage the anger of the people except Onyekwere was prosecuted.
She said, ‘We have commenced sensitization programmes for women, the girl child and young boys, to avert abuse of the younger generation.
‘We also call on groups and faith based organizations, as well as churches, to teach morals and embrace the culture and traditions of society for posterity. I’m calling for full prosecution of the suspect to serve as a deterrent to others.’
Speaking earlier, the leader of the women’s organization, Hon. Nkiru Nwagbo, contended that the body would leave no stone unturned until the victim got justice.
‘We do not know what our society is turning into and that is why we are doing all that we can to get justice and this will serve as a lesson for those who may want to continue in this inhumane act,’ she added.
DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, had in an earlier visit by the group, stated that the command was carrying out more investigation on the matter.
He said the suspect had already been remanded in a correctional centre, while advising parents and guardians to be mindful of the people they handed over their children to as house maids.
